In this video we are going to discover how cells take in useful substances and remove waste using three methods of transportation: diffusion, osmosis and then in the second part we will look at active transport. The exchange of materials occurs between cells and their environment, across the cell membrane. To make this exchange as efficient as possible, some organisms have evolved specialised exchange surfaces like the alveoli in the lungs, or root hairs in plants or the nephrons in kidneys. Depending upon what is being exchanged and which direction along the concentration gradient things are travelling will determine whether diffusion, osmosis or active transport will be used. Diffusion is the process in which particles spread out from each other. They move from high concentration to an area of low concentration, down the concentration gradient until they are evenly distributed. Osmosis is very similar to diffusion but just for water. It is the movement of water into or out of a cell. Again, it is the movement from a dilute solution (so high concentration of water molecules) down the concentration gradient to a more concentrated solution - so low concentration of water molecules. The water molecules move across a partially permeable membrane. Watch part 2 to learn about active transport. SUBSCRIBE to the FuseSchool YouTube channel for many more educational videos. The presentation will describe alternative methods based on the results of the Open University led parts of an EC FP7 project (HOSANNA www.greener-cities.eu). These methods are not considered at present by planners, highway engineers or noise consultants but are particularly relevant to cost-effective sustainable environmental policies in predominantly rural areas (common in Northern Ireland) and in cities, since they exploit and enhance the environment between the noise source and nearby people. They include (i) deployment of acoustically-soft ground such as non-compacted grassland; (ii) growing crops; (iii) planting tree belts and forests and (iv) deliberately introducing low (0.3 m high or less) wall configurations over hard ground. Tree belts can be effective noise barriers by combining sound absorption by decaying leaf litter, foliage attenuation and ‘sonic crystal’ effects through planting patterns. A particularly effective form of low wall design is a lattice. MLAs would benefit from knowing about these possibilities when making policies affecting land use and the planning of new developments near surface transport corridors.

This research is all about the introduction and airworthiness of cruiser-feeder operations for civil aircraft. Cruiser-feeder operations are investigated as a promising pioneering idea for the air transport of the future. The movie shows an artist impression. The soundness of the concept of cruiser-feeder operations for civil aircraft is easy to understand, taking air-to-air refuelling operations as an example. For air-to-air refuelling, a comprehensive estimate of fuel burn reduction potential and a CO2 emission reduction is 31% for a typical 6000 nautical miles flight with a payload of 250 passengers. This reduction potential is known to be large by any standard. The top level objective of the RECREATE project is to demonstrate on a preliminary design level that cruiser-feeder operations (as a concept to reduce fuel burn and CO2 emission levels) can be shown to comply with the airworthiness requirements for civil aircraft. Further, airworthy operational concepts for cruiser-feeder operations are determined and studied in the RECREATE project. The benefits in terms of CO2 emission reduction are derived and quantified. This is conducted in three integrating work packages, which are underpinned by research conducted in three disciplinary work packages. A conceptual and preliminary design study of cruiser and feeder aircraft required will be made, as well as automatic flight control concepts necessary to reduce the workload of the pilots and concepts to transfer passengers, supplies and waste. Finally, flight simulations will be conducted to investigate the cruiser-feeder operations concept. The 42 month RECREATE projected is co-ordinated by NLR. It is funded by the European Union through the Seventh Framework Programme FP7/2007-2013 under grant agreement n° 284741, and by the beneficiaries: Nationaal Lucht- en Ruimtevaartlaboratorium (The Netherlands), Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft - Und Raumfahrt (Germany), Totalforsvarets Forskningsinstitut (Sweden), Technische Universitaet Muenchen (Germany), Technische Universiteit Delft (The Netherlands), The Queen's University of Belfast (United Kingdom), Zurcher Hochschule fur Angewandte Wissenschaften (Switzerland), Dr Rajendar Kumar Nangia (United Kingdom), Nuclear Research and consultancy Group (The Netherlands).
